Inner Canthus Surgery

Inner Canthus Surgery, also known as canthoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure aimed at adjusting the shape and position of the eye corners to provide a wider and more natural appearance for the eyes. This method is typically used when the eye corners are narrow, the lower eye corners are excessively low, or to create a more vibrant and refreshed look around the eyes.

Facelift surgery is a cosmetic procedure aimed at improving prominent signs of aging on the face and neck, such as:

  • Facial skin laxity causing sagging
  • Deep folds between the nose and corners of the mouth
  • Reduced or eliminated fat tissue
  • Heavy and sagging skin around the jawline
  • Loose skin and excess fat on the neck, often appearing as a double chin or "turkey neck."

When consulting for a facelift surgery, clients typically expect to discuss:

  • Their surgical goals
  • Medical conditions, medication allergies, and current medical treatments
  • Current medications, vitamins, herbal supplements, alcohol, and tobacco use
  • Past surgical history

During the consultation, your plastic surgeon will:

  • Assess your overall health status and any pre-existing health conditions or risk factors
  • Discuss your options for facelift surgery
  • Examine and measure your facial features
  • Take photographs
  • Propose the most suitable surgical approach for you
  • Discuss potential outcomes of the facelift and any risks or potential complications
  • Discuss the type of anesthesia that will be used

The consultation is the time for you to ask questions with your plastic surgeon. It's natural to have concerns, whether it's excitement about the expected aesthetic improvements or some apprehension before surgery. Don't hesitate to discuss these feelings openly with your plastic surgeon.

What are the risks of facelift surgery?

The decision to undergo cosmetic surgery is highly personal, and you will need to weigh the potential benefits of achieving your goals against the risks and potential complications of facelift surgery. Only you can make that decision for yourself.

You will be required to sign consent forms to ensure that you fully understand the procedure, as well as any risks and potential complications.

While rare, risks of facelift surgery include:

  • Anesthesia risks
  • Bleeding
  • Injury to facial nerves
  • Fluid accumulation, infection
  • Temporary or permanent changes in skin sensation
  • Persistent pain
  • Poor wound healing and skin loss
  • Prolonged swelling
  • Temporary or permanent hair loss at the incision site
  • Unsightly scars

These risks and any others will be thoroughly discussed before your consent. It's important that you address all your questions directly with your plastic surgeon.

What do clients need to prepare for facelift surgery?

To prepare for facelift surgery, you may be asked to:

  • Undergo blood tests or a comprehensive health assessment
  • Adjust some medications or stop taking certain medications
  • Quit smoking
  • Avoid aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, and herbal supplements as they can increase bleeding and bruising after surgery

What are the steps of the facelift procedure?

The facelift procedure includes the following steps:

Step 1 – Anesthesia

Medication is administered to ensure your comfort during the procedure. Your surgeon will recommend the best option for you.

Additional procedures that may enhance the outcome of the facelift surgery include:

  • Facial implants or fat transfer to improve contours
  • Surface treatments to improve skin tone and texture
  • Wrinkle reduction using fat injections or fillers

Step 2 – The incision

Depending on the extent of changes you desire, your facelift options include traditional facelift, limited incision facelift, or neck lift.

A traditional facelift incision typically begins at the hairline above the temple, continues around the ear, and ends at the lower scalp. Fat may be trimmed or redistributed, and deeper tissues of the face and muscles are lifted. The skin is then re-draped over the uplifted contours, and excess skin is trimmed away.

A second incision under the chin may be necessary to further improve aging changes in the neck.

Traditional Facelift

An alternative method to the traditional facelift is using shorter incisions at the temple, continuing around the ear. The "mini facelift" is often for clients with less skin laxity, resulting in less rejuvenation compared to a full facelift.

Limited Incision Facelift

Step 3 – Closing the Incisions

The incisions will be closed with sutures that may need to be removed after a few days. Once healed, post-facelift incisions are typically well-hidden within the hairline and natural contours of the face and ears.

Step 4 – Assessing the Results

Noticeable improvements from the facelift appear as swelling and bruising diminish. Your final results not only restore a more youthful and relaxed appearance but also boost your self-confidence.

What do clients expect during the facelift recovery process?

After completing the facelift, you may wear bandages around the face to minimize swelling and bruising. Small tubes may be present to drain blood or fluid.

You will receive specific instructions on caring for the surgical site and drains, medications for application and ingestion, specific concerns to note at the surgical site or general health status, and when to contact your plastic surgeon.

What results do clients expect after a facelift?

Most clients regain confidence in their facial appearance within 10-14 days after facelift surgery, but it may take 2-3 months for the face to feel "normal" in terms of texture, sensitivity, and reduced tightness.

Continued daily sun protection and a healthy lifestyle will help prolong the results of your facelift.

As swelling and bruising decrease, noticeable improvements from the facelift will appear. While good results are anticipated, they cannot be guaranteed. In some cases, optimal results may not be achieved with a single surgery and additional procedures may be necessary.

Follow your surgeon's instructions to ensure the success of your surgery.
